about
malene

“One might say my style is minimalistic yet playful – I like to challenge status quo – the style is not set in stone, but evolving just as I do.”

About the brand / the jewellery / the style
Malene Glintborg seeks to uphold a simple business setup where all pieces are handmade and she handles as many of the phases in the process as possible. This keeps the workflow very flexible – allowing her to test and experiment whenever she feel like it.

Malene Glintborg jewellery is particularly playful and evoking free association. Her collections are minimal in their expression, often using clear geometric forms as a point of departure. Some collections surprise with moveable and ever changing elements, others capture an architectural structure and sense of space in a jewelry piece.

Basically she is fascinated by geometry and transforming it to follow the anatomy of the finger, ear and so on. Most of the pieces only really makes sense when you see them on a person. It is important that most of the designs have a clear concept, but that they also ‘twist’ what we are used to expect from a piece of jewelry. Trends is not forecasting the next collection – gut feeling and her own sense of aesthetics are.

She aims at giving customers an affordable possibility to buy unique, handcrafted and experimental jewellery, which is still wearable and ‘everyday friendly’.

“I do handmade jewellery – not because I’m in love with small shiny pieces, but because it allows me to be involved in the process from idea to final product and beyond.”

About Malene Glintborg / the business / and a career move
Malene Glintborg is an educated architect – cand. arch from Kunstakademiets Arkitektskole in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her professional career is rather diverse. It is not so much scale and media as it is the thought behind the design that matters.

During her education she focused mainly on the sensation of space – phenomenology, and the more sociological aspects of architecture, through experimental studies in both spacial installation and drawing.

After and during architecture school she worked for the consultancy ReD associates, who delivers strategy and concepts for several larger companies. But a long for craftsmanship and a more palpable design process brought her into jewellery design. Since 2010 she has been designing and producing her own jewellery-line – Malene Glintborg.

Before 2010 Glintborg did not see it coming that jewellery design would be her thing – she did not even wear jewellery herself.

While her previous job required detailed empirical and theoretical analyses before any decisions could be made. She was now looking for a profession where one could be involved in all the phases of the development process, from idea generation to product development, without it demanding a big production system – and choices could be made out of pure love to aesthetics.

Making jewellery turned out to be a perfect fit.
